Eyeing the opportunity to break their five-year jinx of not clinching another Battle of the Giants win, Rewa plans to take each game as it comes when the tournament kicks off this Friday in Labasa.
The team last lifted the BOG trophy in 2020 when they beat Suva 1-0 at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Now, with the National Premier League on a break at round 14 last Sunday due to the tournament, Rewa’s assistant coach Priyant Mannu stated clearly what the goal was for the Delta Tigers.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the tournament but as a top team, we’ll just try to go game by game and see how far can we go,” Mannu shared.
With eyes on the prize for the other seven competing teams for this year’s BOG, Rewa finds itself in the company of familiar foes such as Nadi, Navua and Suva.
Noting the team’s placement in Group B for this year’s tournament, he added it would not be an easy contest.
“Every team is tough. The top eight teams, they qualify and playing Navua, Nadi and Suva, it won’t be easy,” he said.
“They have good, capable players with a good coaching staff so yes, it will be a tough pool – it is a tough pool, and we’ll have to manage it game by game.”
Meanwhile, Mannu shared these sentiments after the team’s 1-0 win over Ba in round 14 of the Extra Premier League at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori last Sunday.
This year’s Battle of the Giants, sponsored by Extra Supermarket, kicks off at Subrail Park in Labasa, returning to the Babasiga Town after a lapse of 23 years.
When the grand final of the BOG took place there in 2002, the Babasiga Lions were defeated 1-2 by Nadroga.
