Government will review the Online Safety Act 2018 to expand protection against cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and other online harms.
In his ministerial statement to Parliament yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica said the Act was groundbreaking when introduced, but had not undergone the mandatory two-year reviews.
“Since then, we have witnessed rapid technological advancement, particularly in online platforms,” he said.
“This reinforces the urgent need for a responsive, relevant, and effective legislative framework.”
Proposed reforms will consider new categories of offences, stronger penalties, broader definitions, and additional regulatory powers.
National consultations would guide the amendments, which Mr Kamikamica said, were crucial to safeguarding vulnerable Fijians and combating misinformation.
“The review and its amendments will ensure that the law continues to safeguard our citizens, especially the most vulnerable, against the evolving challenges of online activity,” he told Parliament.
