A MARIST Brothers High School student has called on the Education Ministry to review and improve how spot checks are conducted in schools, highlighting the impact these procedures have on classroom learning time.

The student, who wished to remain anonymous, raised the issue during the public consultations conducted by the Fiji Education Commission on the review of the Fiji Education Act 1966.

“I understand it’s a big topic when we talk about spot checks,” the Year 13 student said.

“But, if I’m correct, each school has a form or something that parents have to sign, agreeing that the student or the child will follow the rules of the school.

“What if the Ministry of Education can take a serious look into sport checks?

“For example, if something is found in a student’s bag, we might have a discussion in our school hall and then everybody gathers, and time is wasted just talking about one single thing.”

The student said that with proper guidelines and additional parental consent, spot checks could be carried out more effectively, without compromising valuable instructions time.

“Education is on the line, I’m learning,” he added.
