The Vatia drug bust has mobilised retired police officers in Rakiraki to host youth empowerment programs aimed at encouraging the young Fijians to be productive members of society.

The event held at Davui Ground in Rakiraki was officiated by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu who welcomed the initiative called the “Elevate Youth Volleyball Festival” organised by former police officers Sitiveni Waqa and Alesi Waqa-Paul.

He said it was encouraging that former officers were driving community policing efforts which was an important extension of their work.

“I would like to thank Mr Waqa for the initiative in organising this tournament for our youths,” Mr Tudravu said.

“It’s reassuring to know we have a very active retired and former police officer’s association, with members who continue to serve their communities, forever loyal to their oath to serve and protect.”

Mr Waqa said the Vatia drug bust in Tavua had inspired a drive to bring youths together and raise awareness about keeping their communities safe.

“Ever since the drug bust in Vatia, our intent was to bring youths together, for awareness purposes and to gain a better understanding of how they can help in keeping their communities safe,” he said.

“Sports is an effective tool in bringing our youths together, hence this volleyball tournament, where they can meet, network towards keeping our communities safe.”

He added the inaugural tournament started in a small way, but they anticipated a bigger event in 2027.
