Retired Judge Filimone Jitoko elected as Speaker of Parliament

Filimone Jitoko in Parliament this morning – SUPPLIED

Retired judge, Filimone Jitoko is the new Speaker of Parliament.

He was elected with a majority vote of 34-15 in Parliament a short while ago, defeating Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu’s nominee, Ruveni Nadalo.

Justice Jitoko served as Chief Justice at the Nauru Supreme Court from 2017 till 2000 and he also served as the Registrar from 2015 till 2017.

He graduated from the University of the South Pacific in 1969, he spent one year at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand where he obtained a Bachelor in Law, and following that, he was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1978.
