Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on males to respect women and be aware of their obligations towards them.
Speaking during the Pacific Polytech graduation ceremony in Nausori yesterday, he said women were becoming victims of domestic violence.
“I ask all of you here today, be conscious of your act, be mindful of our responsibilities, especially men for looking after our women,” Mr Rabuka said.
“To every one of you here, gender is part of your agenda, the part of the objective of you turning gender consciousness.
“Those of you who are with families, remember that, look after our women.”
He raised concerns on the incidents which happened recently where a few women lost their lives as a result of domestic violence.
“Two weeks ago, we had two funerals in Suva alone.
“We interred the bodies of two victims of domestic violence.
“The women all over the world always try and wear something black today, in memory, or in remembrance of women victims of gender violence within the family.
“I have my badge on and my respect for women, my respect for the Minister for Women who has asked us to wear this badge every Thursday.”
