Residents voiced strong concerns over a proposed multi-million-dollar waste-to-energy power plant in Vuda, Lautoka, during a public consultation at Dreketi Temple in Saweni on Thursday.
The project, led by Australian businessman Ian Malouf, aims to convert waste into energy, reduce Fiji’s reliance on imported diesel, and save the country an estimated $250million annually. Construction is expected to begin by late 2027.
Attendee Keni Dakuidreketi said frustrations during the meeting stemmed from misunderstandings about the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
“It’s fiery but this is the beginning,” he said.
“I think there is a lot of miscommunication here, that we are trying to solve everything today.
“This is a question-and-answer session; you raise your issues and they are noted down.”
Mr Dakuidreketi explained that the consultation was a mandatory part of the EIA, not intended to provide immediate solutions.
“The terms of reference for the EIA is massive, and this is just the beginning. People were expecting answers today — you’re not going to get an answer today.”
Some participants suggested relocating the plant near the Vunato landfill, but Mr Dakuidreketi questioned the fairness of the proposal.
“If it’s not good enough for you, why would it be good enough for someone else? At least they own this land,” he said.
Further consultations are scheduled, and Mr Dakuidreketi expressed hope the broader national benefits of the project would eventually be recognised.
