The Fiji Bulikula Residents squad is stepping up preparations for a key clash against the Canada Ravens on July 28 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, a match that could shape the future of Fiji’s women’s rugby league campaign.
While it may seem like just another game, this match is much more than that.
It marks the final trial for local-based players as the coaching staff works to finalise the squad for the upcoming IRL Women’s World Series, a major qualifying tournament for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, to be held in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Head coach Viliame Domo said the focus during training is now on fitness, game structure and developing strong team combinations.
With several spots in the final team still open, competition is intense.
“This is more than just a game for these girls,” said Domo.
“It’s a chance for our local players to show they deserve to be part of the main Bulikula team.”
Domo explained that while skill and fitness are important, selectors are also watching closely for discipline, teamwork and decision-making.
“We’re focusing on mindset, structure and how players respond in game situations. This game will show us who’s ready,” he said.
Hence why Fiji’s upcoming game in Lautoka on July 28 is so important.
It is also the coaches’ last chance to watch local players before choosing the final squad.
