BA residents awaiting assistance to deal with termite infestation have not received an update in nearly two years, says resident Rukshana Jhan of Vatulaulau.

Ms Jhan expressed her concern during a Meet the Press event in Ba on Thurday.

“Regarding the termites, it’s almost two years now that we haven’t been updated,” she said.

Ba Town Council special administrator Moshim Khan clarified the issue was typically the responsibility of the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) and not the council.

Transport and Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed a committee was appointed to address the termite issue, headed by Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran and Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Sakiusa Tubuna.

“Because of the urgency of the situation, they’d been working closely with the biosecurity on that,” he said.

“In fact, they had a budget and had been working. But the specific update on that, we’ll have to get from that team.”

He added: “My understanding is, they’ve gone through the various areas where the infections were, and had taken the necessary action, and the preventive action for that specific area to be confined, and also deal with it in that situation to stop the spread.”
