A long-time resident of Nasivi settlement in Vatukoula, Tavua, has called for swift government action following a fatal road accident at Nasivi Bridge last weekend.
Four people died on Saturday night, June 13, when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the river at Nasivi Bridge.
Manasa Maseinawa Tubuitamana, who has lived in the area for about 40 years, said authorities have repeatedly replaced the bridge due to flood damage.
“This river is deep because this is a swimming ground and it’s called rocky beach, so you will see people coming here around lunchtime to swim,” he said.
“When this bridge is flooded, no vehicle can pass because the water cuts off access, so we would end up placing rocks near the bridge.”
Mr Tubuitamana urged the Government to elevate the structure above flood levels and install safety railings.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau offered condolences to the families of the deceased.
“For the ministry, the team is currently assessing that bridge and also to put in place some safety measures” he said.
