The Online Safety Commission would like to clarify that reporting instances of online abuse to the Commission is free of charge.
Members of the public do not have to pay any amount to lodge a report with the Commission.
Established by the Online Safety Act 2018, the Online Safety Commission promotes online safety, deters harmful electronic communication, and protects Fijians from online abuse.
The Commission’s official reporting channels are contacting 9980242 or emailing help@onlinesafetycommission.com
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Co-operatives Small and Medium Enterprises and Communication Manoa Kamikamica expressed concern over the matter.
“It is concerning that misinformation about the Online Safety Commission are being spread. The general public must be made aware that it does not cost anything to report online abuse to Commission through their various channels such as phone, emails or through their website. In fact, the Commission has been receiving over 100 complaints a month, which is an increasing trend,” said DPM Kamikamica.
“We want to reassure Fijians that reporting online abuse to us is completely free,” said Tajeshwari Devi, the Acting Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission.
“Do not engage with anyone claiming you have to pay to report online abuse, as they are not affiliated with the Commission.”
The Commission takes reports of online abuse seriously and can issue notices for the removal of harmful content in appropriate cases.
However, the Commission also emphasises that respectful behaviour is important both online and offline. Everyone should use social media and digital communication safely and responsibly.
If you experience severe online abuse, you may also contact the Fiji Police Force or a helpline like Lifeline Fiji. Do not engage directly with online abusers, as this can often make the situation worse.
The Online Safety Commission is committed to promoting a safe, responsible and positive online environment for all Fijians.
Reporting instances of online abuse helps the Commission identify harmful trends, enforce online safety standards, and make the internet a safer place for everyone.
