The Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index 2023 was launched by the Pacific Freedom Forum at the Seventh PINA Media Summit in Niue today.
The report details the various challenges that 73 journalists from the Pacific have faced in the area of media freedom.
PFF chairperson and PINA vice president Robert Luke Iroga said the report was a pilot project for the Forum and opened the door for more surveys to be conducted by journalists for journalists.
“The inauguration of a Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index signifies a very important achievement for all Pacific islands journalists,” he said.
“The first of it’s kind to be carried out for and by Pacific Island newsrooms this report underscores the importance of a Pacific islands based group capturing the voices of Pacific Islanders across the blue ocean regarding the current state of media freedom in our islands.”
