Victims of image-based abuse should not fear coming forward, says Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale.

While enforcing the law remains a priority, Mr Batiwale told The Fiji Times that ensuring victims received support was just as important.

“Our role is to support those who have been harmed, and we encourage anyone who has experienced revenge pornography or online abuse to come forward without fear,” he said.

“It is important for victims of image-based abuse to know that seeking help is not a crime.”

Mr Batiwale said the Online Safety Commission (OSC) provides a confidential platform for victims to report cases of revenge pornography and online abuse under the Online Safety Act 2018.

“Our focus is on supporting survivors rather than penalising them.

“Victims should never fear repercussions for seeking help, and the Commission remains a steadfast advocate for their protection.”

He assured that all reports were handled with confidentiality and sensitivity, with the OSC offering guidance on legal options and access to counselling where needed.

“Complainants can submit their cases directly to the OSC through secure channels without fear of exposure. Additionally, the commission provides guidance on legal options available to victims and, where necessary, facilitates access to counselling and support services.

“Our partnerships with organisations such as women’s rights groups and social service providers ensure survivors receive the emotional and psychological support they need. We are also committed to continuous training for our staff to ensure victims are treated with empathy and professionalism.

The OSC urges anyone who has experienced or witnessed online abuse to report it immediately to prevent further harm.
