Exam-oriented teaching and learning exerts undue pressure on students, forcing boys in Fiji to leave school early, states a new report released by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The “Boys’ disengagement from education – Fiji case study” report was authored by Dr Wahab Ali, associate professor and head of education department at the University of Fiji.
“The study found that academic difficulties are one of the reasons students become disengaged from schooling,” the report stated.
“Academic difficulties have many dimensions and can include the relevance of the curriculum, pedagogy and practice, staff qualifications and assessment and evaluation. Subject combinations also play a major role in encouraging students to complete their studies. At times, students consider certain subjects difficult and lose interest in them.”
