Remove value added tax (VAT) on all basic food items, medicines and infant products and reduce electricity tariffs across the board by 15 per cent.

These were some of the proposals put forward by former prime minister and Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry for the 2021-2022 National Budget.

He also said with tourism’s medium term prospects “considerably depleted” attention must turn to agriculture and Government must continue the guaranteed price of $85 per tonne for cane farmers and “yaqona, dalo, ginger, fresh produce and dairy industries must be supported with financial and technical assistance”.
