THE $30k-plus rehabilitation of a termite-infested classroom block at Saint Thomas Primary School in Lautoka has begun.

Earlier this month, the Government deemed two classrooms unsafe, resulting in the provision of two tents for the temporary conduct of classes.

The progress of construction work, paid for by the Government, was inspected by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during a recent visit to Lautoka.

He said the damage caused by the infestation had significantly disrupted classes.

“I’m pleased to see that the construction for a 1 x 4 classroom block is now underway at St Thomas Primary School following damage caused by a termite infestation at the existing classroom buildings,” said Mr Rabuka.

“The school management had earlier brought this issue to my attention, highlighting how the damage had significantly disrupted learning for the students.

“In response, the Office of the Prime Minister, through the Small Grants Scheme, provided building materials valued at around $30,221.17 to support the school’s restoration.”

The Prime Minister reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to strengthening education and ensuring children were able to learn in safe and supportive environments.

“They are the heart of our future and together, we will continue to create opportunities and build a brighter, more prosperous Fiji for them.”
