The Fiji Labour Party is calling for the more Value Added Tax free food items.
This was one of the resolutions at the FLP national council meeting in Nadi on Saturday.
The party resoluition is also asking for the reduction of VAT to 10% .
“The National Council also wants the list of VAT exempt food items extended to include eggs, meat, marine products and other important cooking ingredients in daily use, essential for the nutritional health of our people,” said the resolution.
“Such essential items must be put within the reach of our poor.”
The party said the country currently had a ‘rising cost of living.”
“While the Ministers and MPs have taken huge increases in their salaries and allowances, they have caused great hardship to the ordinary people by increasing VAT from 9% to 15% in the 2023/24 Budget.”
