Maintain vigilance over the remainder of the festive season in the wake of another home being destroyed by fire last weekend.

NFA acting CEO Joel Israel said members of the public must take preventative measures to avoid unwanted fires.

“As we are well into the festive season, members of the public are urged to take preventative measures to minimise fire risks,” he said in a statement.

“With ongoing celebrations tied to the festive session, we’re committed to long hours in church, at weddings and come home tired and straight to bed.

“We’re pleading with all heads of households to ensure everything is in place and that your families are safe before calling it a day.

“These checks must ensure mosquito coils are placed on non-flammable surfaces away from curtains and flammable liquids, and substances must be stored in safe spaces.”

Mr Israel urged members of the public to turn off lights and electrical appliances when not in use.

“These may be simple things, but they ensure fire safety and reduce fire hazards.

“We also urge members of the public to develop an escape plan within their homes and teach their children how to avoid fires and what to do in case of a fire.”

The recent blaze destroyed a four-bedroom house at Navutu in Lautoka at 3.53am with the cost of damage now estimated at $200,000.

According to NFA, the house belonged to a 58-year-old pastor with the Cross Over Ministry.

Six people have been displaced by the fire.
