Nitya Reddy – New Zealand-based former Fiji Labour Party member of Parliament Nitya Reddy – has been appointed chairman of the Fiji Sugar Corporation board of directors.
He replaces Vodafone Fiji regional chief executive officer Pradeep Lal who was the chairman for six years.
“At my call he has agreed to offer his vision and provide much-needed leadership to assist in the recovery of the industry, which has been suffering from a serious deficit of confidence and credibility for such a long time,” said Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh.
Mr Reddy is a chartered accountant and has been a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and NZ (ICANZ) for the last 32 years and while in Fiji, worked for FSC at its four sugar mills.
He also led the four sugar unions in the reform and the restructuring of the Sugar Industry Act of 1984 and assisted in the formulation of the first Master Award for the canefarmers.
“He possesses extensive experience and knowledge of the key components and operations of the sugar industry from cultivation, harvesting, transport and to milling.
“The industry faces many challenges both in its day-to-day operations and its long-term strategic directions. He has the full confidence of the Government and the board to meet those challenges.”
Mr Reddy was elected to Parliament in 1987 under the Timoci Bavadra coalition government.
