Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna confirmed that assistance would be provided to help the sugar industry recover from flood damage.

“Since we have only one crushing season, there will be some assistance in terms of how we can get the recovery back on track,” he said.

“And this is very much dependent on the current survey and assessment our staff have been doing on the field.”

He said he was yet to receive the full status report on the number of farms affected in the Western Division but expected an update soon.

“People are working 24 hours trying to get these figures because I will be presenting those statistics to the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka,” Mr Tunabuna said.

He said he met teams from other ministries in the Western Division, including Rural and Development and the Prime Minister’s Office, to better understand the extent of the work.

“We will probably provide an update to the Prime Minister’s Office on our findings from the different sectors which we are representing.”
