Reckless and criminal  is how the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF)  described the recent surge in deliberate sugarcane field fires.

Its CEO Vinesh Kumar said such acts had severe repercussions, not just for farmers, but for the entire sugarcane industry.

“Deliberately setting fire to sugarcane fields is not only a reckless act, but also a criminal offense with severe repercussions,” Mr Kumar said.

“SRIF has recently incurred substantial losses in critical research data due to these incidents.”

He said  a single act of arson could obliterate valuable research in an instant, reversing significant progress and negatively impacting the sector’s future.

“Arson in sugarcane fields threatens not only the economic stability of farmers, but also the scientific research that underpins the sustainability and future growth of the industry. Those responsible for such unlawful activities will face strict legal consequences.”

He called on the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to authorities.

“By doing so, we can collectively safeguard our sugarcane fields, preserve the integrity of ongoing research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our sugarcane industry.”
