Suva secured a 1-0 win against a strong Rewa FC side in the Digicel Fiji Premier League at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori yesterday.
Kavaia Rawaqa scored the lone goal in 32nd minute of play.
Even with the absence of five of their senior players, Suva managed to defend their line well, forcing Rewa to miss scoring opportunities which cost them the match.
Suva FC coach Maxwell Thaggard said the win had boosted the moral of the players, many of whom are still recovering from their loss at the OFC Championship earlier this year.
Taggart said defence was their main weapon against Rewa.
“The boys defended well today, and showed heart in the way the played against Rewa, one of the toughest teams in the tournament.
“There are still a few areas the boys need to work on and we’ll go through this during the week.”
He labelled ball handling as an area his side needed to work on as they now try to keep momentum with their win.
“Ball handling is certainly an area we need to work on, and we will be going through this during the week.”
He thanked all the Suva FC supporters for coming in numbers to support the team in Nausori.
“We’re thankful to the team for coming out, your presence motivated the boys to play better today.
Meanwhile, Rewa coach Rodicks Singh said his side missed a handful of scoring opportunities which cost then the game.
“There was a lot of scoring opportunities throughout the game but the boys couldn’t capitalise,” he said.
Rewa will be going back to their drawing board this week, where Singh said they’ll work on their weaknesses.
“We managed to dominate games, but there is just too much opportunities the boys miss on the field.
“We’ll be going back to our drawing board and see on how we can improve on this area.”
Singh said this also cost them their last two games, and will need to improve if they want to commence into the competition.
“I’m not saying the boys aren’t playing well, it’s just they are missing golden opportunities on most occasions.
“If the boys get this area correct, then they will be able to get back and win games.”
