Ratuva calls it a day, hangs boots

FORMER Flying Fijian flanker Iliesa Ratuva has finally called it a day from his rugby career.

The 35-year-old policeman was farewelled by his teammates and Nadroga rugby officials during the union’s awards night at the Ratu Makutu Hall at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, Yanuca Island, on Tuesday evening.

Ratuva said he had made up his mind that he would hang his boots at the end of this year.

He has been with the sport for more than 10 years and playing top provincial rugby most hof his time.

“I believe I have achieved my goal in rugby and reached the pinnacle of my rugby career,” he said.

“I started with the Nadroga colts then moved to the Nadroga under-23 and our provincial senior team for many years.

“I earned 12 Tests with the Flying Fijians and was also a member of the Fiji 7s team.

“This year I was part of the Nadroga team that successfully defended both the HFC Bank sponsoured-Farebrother Trophy and the Skipper Cup and to top it off, our Police rugby team retained the Sukuna Bowl.

“I cherish my time as a rugby player and it has taught me many things and the comradeship that goes with it.”

He said even though he would be posted to Korovou, Tailevu, the home of the Northland rugby team that plays in the major union, he would not play for any team again.

“I made a promise that I would not play against my provincial rugby team of Nadroga. My allegiance is to my province of Nadroga and paramount chief, the Kalevu will always remain with me,’ he said.

He has also gave credit to his fellow rugby players of Nadroga who came from other provinces.
