The President and Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has called for the protection of traditional protocols and culture.
He told those present at the vakasenuqanuqa ceremony at Somosomo Village on Taveuni that traditional protocols were fading away.
“It is important to ensure that cultural protocols are followed correctly,” he said.
Ratu Naiqama said some key aspects of traditional ceremonies, such as song lyrics and the presence of proper warriors at traditional gatherings were being overlooked.
“Some words of the song for traditional kava ceremonies are missing.
“We must use the right traditional warriors at important events such as this.”
Ratu Naiqama said the younger generation must take the responsibility of learning and preserving these customs to ensure they are passed down correctly.
“We must teach our children these practices so that they understand their significance.
“If we do not maintain these traditions, we risk losing an important part of our identity.”
Ratu Naiqama urged the village elders to actively teach and guide the youth on such matters.
