FORMER President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has been elected as the new Speaker of Parliament.

This came after the nomination for Speaker by the Opposition to appoint Tanya Waqanika was defeated by 30 votes to 21 in Parliament this morning.

Ratu Epeli was nominated by Government Whip Alvick Maharaj as the Government’s nominee for the position.

Ratu Epeli had previously served as a Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006.
