Stigma, discrimination, and limited access to healthcare services continue to hinder our fight against HIV/AIDS, says UNAIDS Pacific Goodwill Ambassador Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
While speaking at the World AIDS Day in Nasinu on Friday, Ratu Epeli said he had witnessed firsthand the remarkable progress the country had made and the challenges that persisted to counter HIV/AIDS.
“By empowering communities, we enhance our response to these challenges and ensure that our efforts are sustainable and culturally sensitive,” he said.
“Let communities lead” is a call for inclusivity and for listening to and involving those who are often marginalised. This includes women, youth, members of the LGBTQ community, sex workers, and people who use drugs.
“Their voices and experiences are crucial in shaping effective strategies to combat HIV AIDS, particularly in addressing the rising infections among young people.
“By letting communities lead, we can develop tailored responses that address the unique challenges faced by each community such as those evident in Fiji.”
