IOSEFO Rakesa’s silver medal win at the 2026 Oceania Championships is a powerful testament to Athletics Fiji’s commitment to making the sport more inclusive.
Competing in the ambulant men’s javelin final, Rakesa set a new personal best with a throw of 27.81 metres, securing Fiji’s first medal at the championships and shining a spotlight on the growing presence of para-athletics in the country.
Rakesa has long been a standout athlete in the ambulant men’s division, consistently performing at a high level. At one point, he was ranked among the top five in the world for javelin or shortboard in his category.
His recent achievement is a clear demonstration of his dedication and the progress of inclusive sports in Fiji.
Eugene Vollmer, national triple jump record holder and Athletics Fiji administrator, applauded Rakesa’s accomplishment.
“Iosefo’s success reflects not only his talent, but also how far he has come in the sport. This silver medal is a milestone that showcases the strength of para-athletics within Fiji’s athletic community. It inspires others and reaffirms our goal to embrace athletes of all abilities.”
Rakesa’s medal-winning performance also highlights the important role of events like the Coca-Cola Games, where para-athletes and ambulance athletes increasingly compete alongside their peers.
This inclusion is part of Athletics Fiji’s broader strategy to promote diversity and equal opportunities throughout the sport.
With this new personal best and podium finish, Rakesa has not only earned a place among the region’s best but has also become a symbol of progress for inclusive athletics in Fiji.
