Rainy countdown: New Year’s Eve celebrations set to be soaked

New Year’s Eve celebrations across Fiji will be affected by a trough of low pressure that is slowly moving over the country, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and the risk of flash flooding.

The system, approaching from the west, is expected to continue influencing the weather through Thursday, with occasional rain developing in the west first before spreading to the rest of the group.

The Nadi weather office states some of the showers are likely to be heavy, and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon and evening.

Authorities warn that localised heavy falls could trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The wet spell is forecast to continue into Thursday, with periods of heavy rain still possible before conditions gradually ease from the west later in the day.
