FLEETING rainfall experienced over the past few days in the Western Division did not have an impact on river levels, said Fiji Meteorological Service director Ravin Kumar.
Mr Kumar said in the past five days, rainfall measures in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi and Labasa were below average.
“There was an almost negligible impact on the river levels in the major river systems,” he said.
“In Nadi, we measured 26 to 30millimetres of rainfall, Suva received 32mm, Lautoka 3.1mm and Labasa 1.5mm.
“A slow moving trough of low pressure caused these showers over most places. Savusavu recorded 44.1mm of rainfall, which was the highest amount over the past five days.”
The trough had since cleared.
“This gives way for trade winds to be established and will be more prevalent,” Mr Kumar said.
National Disaster Management Office director Akapusi Tuifagalele said the fleeting rain provided only temporary relief and that the current dry spell would expand into 2016.
He said the dry conditions would be most prevalent in the Northern and Western divisions.
The NDMO director said relief efforts provided to affected areas had been continuing through the Emergency Water Relief Programs activated in each administrative division.
