Raiders on course with title defence

DEFENDING their Vodafone Cup title, the Vusu Raiders rugby league team is steadfast in their pursuit of reaching the finals, after their win 32-22 victory over the Police Sharks in round 15 at Bidesi Park in Suva.

Despite encountering a rough start to the competition marked by a few losses, head coach Isoa Batibasaga remains confident in the team’s potential to retain their championship through their dedication on the field.

Batibasaga expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasising the importance of giving their all in every game.

“I was very happy for this game, we were prepared for the Elimination round, because we were told this week will be the Elimination, but I told the boys Elimination or it’s still a pool game we give all our best on the field today (yesterday),” said Batibasaga.

Acknowledging the tough challenge presented by the Police Sharks, Batibasaga praised his players for their defensive efforts and cohesive teamwork that ultimately led to victory.

“I told the boys we are the defending champions from last year, even though we started of the competition rough had a few loses, but we still can do it and defend our trophy.

“I like to thank the almighty for the strength and to the boys for giving all their best on the field today.

“The Police gave us a tough match, we pressured the boys during the first half, but I’m thankful for the boy’s defence and teamwork that got us the win.”

He highlighted the positive impact of the team’s young players on the field, recognising their contribution to the team’s success and growth.

Batibasaga also identified areas for improvement, particularly in ball handling and scrummaging.

“We have few things to work on especially our ball work, we have been dropping the ball a lot and our scrums, we will be looking at that and come back next week and do our best on our next match.”

Coach expressed gratitude to sponsors for their support and to the families of the players for their unwavering support.
