AFTER two straight losses, the Vusu Raiders rugby league team have finally found their rhythm.

The Nadroga-based side secured their first win of the Vodafone Cup rugby league competition yesterday, defeating the Lami Steelers 42-14 at Bidesi Park in round three of the competition.

Team manager Sosiceni Tora said the breakthrough win was the result of hard lessons, sleepless nights and a major shift in mindset and fitness.

“We had to go back to the drawing board. Something wasn’t right after those first two games,” Tora said.

The coaching staff identified fitness as a major weakness and lifted training intensity throughout the week.

But it wasn’t just physical effort.

Tora said the team turned to faith and bonding to reconnect.

“Before coming to the match, we shared the Word of God with the boys. We told them, if Jesus is anchoring our ship, we will be steady. We’re not just playing for ourselves, but for something greater, our families and everyone watching,” he said.

A key change was improving team unity.

Tora thanked Beach House Resort and Coastline transport for providing a space for the players to bond over meals and spend time working together.

“That fusion among the boys helped. Everyone came in today with the same mindset,” he said.

The defending champions hit their target of scoring more than 40 points, but Tora said they are far from satisfied.

“We still need to improve. The last 20 minutes showed we need more work in our power game and aggressiveness. Discipline in training is key moving forward.”

With confidence restored and fitness improving, the Vusu Raiders have put the competition on notice.

“Now we look ahead, stronger, sharper and more united,” Tora said.
