Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has ordered an independent investigation into reports surrounding a January 2025 trip to New Zealand and the use of funds linked to the Fiji Sports Council.
In a media statement issued last night, the Prime Minister said he met with Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru yesterday and informed him that an independent inquiry will examine matters relating to his official trip to New Zealand under FSC sponsorship, as well as the management of funds by the council’s chief executive officer, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure.
Questions have emerged after media reports suggested that both Mr Saukuru and his wife travelled business class under a Fiji Airways contra arrangement intended for official council travel.
The minister has said he is willing to reimburse the cost.
The controversy surfaced in February after claims suggested FSC funds had been drained by millions, and key decisions, including staff reshuffles and travel approvals were made without the board’s full review.
Mr Rabuka said Mr Saukuru has assured that he will not interfere with the investigation.
The Prime Minister has also authorised the minister’s previously scheduled six-day tour of the Yasawa Group, starting tomorrow.
Further updates on the investigation will be provided as necessary.
