The New Zealand Government has confirmed it did not make an offer to assist the Fijian Government in the judicial review proceedings involving former FICAC commissioner Barbara Malimali.

This clarification was provided to this newspaper following reports suggesting New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had offered the services of a King’s Counsel to support the Fijian State’s legal team.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, however, maintains the New Zealand Government is open to providing assistance if formally requested.

“If it comes to the point where we have to fight, the New Zealand Government is prepared to assist us,” Mr Rabuka said. “And we will take it up.”

He said while no formal request had been made, New Zealand had signalled a willingness to help if asked.

“They are prepared. We have not requested it. If we make the request then they will send it. I would communicate this either through my Solicitor-General or Attorney-General on our side.”
