Isikeli Rabitu said making his debut for the Fijian Drua side in their opening match against the Blues last weekend was an eye-opener.

The 19-year-old, who is also the youngest player in the side, played at fullback position.

“Making my debut in our first match was such a huge honour because the first game of every season is a very important one,” the Tailevu lad said.

From watching Super Rugby players on television to playing alongside them on the field has been nothing short of a dream for the former Suva Grammar School student.

“Some of my favourite Super Rugby players were part of the Blues side so to face them as opponents was an eye-opener.

“Getting to share the field with some of the best players in the competition is a dream come true.”

The youngster said getting more game time and exposure was his target for the 2024 season.

“The goal is to try and impress our coach and get as much game time as I can get.

“The exposure is important because it will allow me to slowly develop.”

He added the match last weekend brought to light a lot of areas he needed to work on.

“First and foremost is confidence, but I believe this will come slowly with time after a few games.

“I need to work on my defence as well, as there were a few times where my defence wasn’t on point.”

Rabitu was part of the Fiji Under-20 side last year before being scouted by Drua head coach Mick Byrne.

“That’s one moment I will never forget, where coach Mick Byrne came to me and told me that he wanted me to join the Drua.”

As the side prepares to face Moana Pacifika in their second match of the season, Rabitu is excited to pounce on another opportunity if given the chance.

“Hopefully coach selects me to play as I am very excited and I can’t wait to jump on the field.”

The Drua plays Moana Pasifika at 6.05pm on Saturday, and faces defending champions Crusaders at Churchill Park on March 9 in Lautoka for their first home game.
