Public consultations on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 will begin this Thursday, October 15, with the Special Parliamentary Committee scheduled to hold six consultation sessions across Fiji over three days.

The consultations will allow members of the public to express their views, raise concerns and make submissions on the proposed constitutional changes contained in Bill No. 32 of 2026.

According to the programme released by Parliament, the first consultation will take place at the Suva Civic Centre on Thursday from 9am to 12pm.

The committee will then travel to Nausori, where a second session will be held at Vunimono High School Hall from 5pm to 8pm.

On Friday, October 16, consultations will move to Navua, with a session scheduled at the Vale ni Valavala i Yasana o Namosi (Provincial Council) Hall from 10am to 12pm.

This will be followed by a consultation at Lawai Village Hall in Nadroga from 4.30pm to 6pm.

On Saturday, October 17, the committee will hold consultations at the Nadi Civic Center Hall from 10am to 1pm, before concluding the advertised three-day programme at the Fiji Girmit Center in Lautoka from 3pm to 5pm.

Parliament has encouraged members of the public to participate in the consultations under the theme “Let’s Talanoa – A Constitution for All Fijians”.

The consultations come amid concerns raised by the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission over the limited timeframe provided for public submissions.

Commissioner Alefina Vuki earlier warned that the 11-day submission period, which closes on October 23, was insufficient for Fijians to properly understand and assess the proposed constitutional amendments.

The Commission has called for an extension of the consultation period to ensure meaningful public participation, particularly among rural, maritime and marginalised communities.

The Special Committee is tasked with reviewing the proposed constitutional amendments and receiving public submissions before reporting its findings to Parliament.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 proposes significant changes to Fiji’s constitutional framework.
