The Ministry of Health & Medical Services is advising members of the public to refrain from entering the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and from swimming in forest pools until further notice, due to an increased risk of leptospirosis following recent cases.
The Ministry did not state if the recent leptospirosis death in Suva was directly related to the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park
The Ministry confirmed that one death has been attributed to leptospirosis, while two additional suspected cases are currently under investigation at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Health authorities warned that after periods of heavy rainfall, river and pool waters can become contaminated and unsafe for recreational use, increasing the risk of infection.
The public is urged to be alert for symptoms of leptospirosis, which include fever, headache, muscle pain, red eyes, vomiting, and yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Anyone feeling unwell is strongly encouraged to seek early screening and prompt treatment at their nearest health facility.
The Ministry stressed that early diagnosis and treatment can save lives and continues to monitor the situation closely.
