THE proposed waste-to-energy development at Vuda has entered a critical assessment phase, with 875 written submissions now under review following the close of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) public viewing period on April 22.
Permanent secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr Sivendra Michael said the volume of responses reflected strong public interest in the project.
“They are supposed to review the entire report, the public consultations, the minutes from the public consultations,” he said.
“The written submissions will take a substantive time because some of the written submissions were quite huge.”
“So, we have to complete all that and then verify against the EIA report itself and then identify the technical.”
“This is where we identify the technical discussions, the chair is independent it’s the department the role of the secretariat.”
Dr Michael confirmed the Technical Review Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 11.
The committee will assess the findings against requirements under the Environment Management (Amendment) Act 2025 and the EIA Process Regulations 2007.
Dr Michael stressed that no final decision has been made, with determination to follow after the full technical review is completed.
