Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Dr. Vinesh Kumar visited the Lautoka Mill today following a workplace incident, where a mill worker was injured while clearing bagasse from a conveyor belt.
A statement from the Ministry said the PS was directed by Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh.
Dr. Kumar conducted the site visit today to assess the situation and ensure that safety measures are being prioritized.
Dr. Kumar commended the mill team for their swift response, noting that their actions ensured the worker received timely attention.
“As a precautionary measure, crushing operations at the Lautoka Mill have been temporarily halted and is expected to resume by tomorrow. This downtime allows for necessary repairs and ensures worker safety remains paramount,” said the Ministry.
Dr. Kumar also acknowledged and praised the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) team for its proactive steps in safely transporting over 100 lorry drivers, some from as far as Sigatoka, back to their respective areas during the unplanned halt in operations.
“The Ministry reiterates its commitment to ensuring workplace safety and continues to work closely with FSC to support all workers and farmers within the sugar industry.”
