Australian renewable energy firm Energy Estate is planning a major expansion of subsea cable and digital infrastructure projects across Australia, with one proposed system set to extend to Fiji, positioning the country as a potential beneficiary of improved international connectivity.
Through its Energy Estate Digital Unit, the company is developing new subsea cable systems linking Tasmania and mainland Australia to the United States and Asia.
One of the proposed projects, the CaliNewy cable, will run from California to Australia, landing at Bell Bay in Tasmania, before linking to Wonthaggi near Melbourne and Newcastle in New South Wales.
From there, the cable is planned to extend onward to Fiji.
The proposal is significant for Fiji, which is increasingly positioning itself as a regional digital hub in the Pacific.
An additional high-capacity international cable could enhance internet resilience, lower latency, support data-intensive services, and strengthen Fiji’s role in trans-Pacific digital traffic.
Founded in 2018, Energy Estate has developed more than 1.24 gigawatts of renewable energy projects and is now integrating data centres with clean power.
