Property owners are urged to be cautious about fire hazards and adopt necessary preventative measures to prevent and protect against destruction and devastation.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci made the call following a fire that affected some business houses in Labasa yesterday.
He said that incident in the northern town was unfortunate.
“… We thank officers from the National Fire Authority and Republic of Fiji Military Forces for assisting police in controlling the movement of people so as to avoid loss of life,” ACP Raikaci said.
He said fire safety was often taken lightly but had devastating consequences on families and livelihoods.
“Businesses have been affected and livelihoods too,” he said, and called on all business and personal property owners to take fire safety seriously.
ACP Raikaci added an even more important reason to take fire safety seriously was to save lives.
