Powerful men holding positions are often the main perpetrators of sexual violence, according to Soqosoqo Vakamarama o Cakaudrove project co-ordinator Maca Shaw.

“Like the chiefs and village headmen, including the father of a family,” she said.

Ms Shaw said this disturbing trend emerged during their community work.

“The father is supposed to provide for the family’s needs, ensure their safety, and be a role model but instead, some use that power to do harm.”

She said some men misuse their traditional authority to control or harm others, even within their own families.

“Some fathers justify their abusive actions by claiming they are exercising parental authority.”

The women’s group is calling for stronger accountability for community leaders and better education around respectful relationships.

She said leadership should never be used as a cover for violence.
