Project gives hope – Bakery for disability centre

THE National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPD) West centre manager Eka Loco has highlighted the positive impact of the centre’s new bakery project.

The bakery is aimed at providing income generation and vocational training for persons with disabilities.

Supported by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, and FMF Foods Ltd, the venture will see trainees and staff produce an assortment of baked goods for sale.

“We are so happy that we have been given these income generation projects (IGP) by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and also our trainees and our staff have been trained by FMF on how to bake bread and buns,” she said.

“The bakery will commence sales next week, offering products to stakeholders, government workers in the vicinity and the Golden Age Homes.”

Ms Loco said the centre would facilitate this initiative for its 12 trainees with disabilities so that they can sustain themselves after finishing from the centre.

Baked goods will include long loaf, wholemeal, sliced bread, buns and square loaf.

Production will be done at the centre, with deliveries facilitated by a dedicated van.

“We’ll be doing an advertisement just to let the public know we are making bread at the centre and for delivery, because we have our van.

“So, most of all, just our family first. We’ll sell it to our close relatives and also to our family members for the trainees and some government offices that are just around these premises.”

This initial phase involves 17 individuals, including staff and trainees.

A key objective of the program is to prepare trainees for potential employment in external bakeries.

“They’ll be trained here then we will try to talk with all the bakers, if some of our trainees can be given a job there at their bakery.”
