The Department of Environment has issued a prohibition notice to Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) for its Kinoya station to cease discharge of fuel into the environment.
In the notice, Director of Environment Sandeep Singh wrote that an inspection was carried out by department officers and found that EFL’s Kinoya station was in breach of the Environment Management Act 2005 and Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007.
“Energy Fiji Ltd is further instructed to carry out a damage assessment by an independent consultant (registered with the Department of Environment) and submit to the Department of Environment the Damage Assessment Report within 14 days from the day of this notice,” she wrote.
EFL was also instructed to carry out remedial works to address environmental damage caused by the incident.
