An investigation is underway after a Chinese national was reportedly injured during an incident at Naboro Maximum Prison outside Suva.

The Fiji Corrections Service acknowledged the incident but declined to provide further details.

“Yes, there was an incident, and we cannot comment any further as investigations are currently underway,” the service said in a statement.

“We have protocols in place for any incidents inside our Corrections Centres and this will be followed.

“The welfare of all inmates and officers inside our various centres remains paramount in all our daily operations.”

Meanwhile, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Fiji said it was verifying reports that a Chinese national detained at the facility had suffered serious injuries.

Embassy official Peter Liao said the matter remained under review.
