A rare double test match series awaits the Fiji men’s netball team in August, and the players know the spotlight will be on them.
The national side is deep into preparations as they gear up to face Tonga and New Zealand in back-to-back international fixtures later in August.
Head coach Jioweli Vakamoce said this is not just another match, it’s a chance for the team to show how far they’ve come and prove they belong on the world stage.
“This is a major step forward for men’s netball in Fiji,” Vakamoce said.
“We’re putting in the work now, and the boys understand what’s at stake.”
The extended squad has started an eight-week training program, with final selections to be made closer to match day.
Training sessions are being held at the University of the South Pacific.
Vakamoce said the early signs are promising.
“We’re building up their fitness, discipline, and game structure. It’s not just about competing; it’s about playing smart and representing Fiji well.”
While netball is often associated with women’s sport in Fiji, the men’s team is shifting that perception through performance.
After winning the 2024 Men’s netball Nations Series Merlion Cup in December last year and a strong outing in Australia this year in April at the 2025 Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships the squad is drawing more attention.
Now, the focus is fully on August, two international opponents, one goal: to raise the standard even higher.
“We’re not here to make up the numbers,” Vakamoce added.
“We’re here to compete.”
Meanwhile, the location of the test matches is yet to be confirmed.
