Outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has urged magistrates and judges to be guided by the principles of integrity and dignity.

He reminded them of this while addressing judicial officers at a workshop dinner in Nadi last week.

He told the officers in a profession that was heavily guided by law, it was their responsibility to uphold the rule of law and to ensure access to justice for all citizens.

“Impartiality, fairness, and efficiency of the judiciary are, as you are all aware, the cornerstone of a democratic society,” the president said.

“In imparting your roles as officers of the judiciary, I urge you to be mindful of the assessments you make, and that they reflect the urgency for transparent decision-making.

“Maintaining checks and balances are, therefore, critical to ensure adherence to the rule of law and to safeguard the essence of a fair and just judicial system.”

He said training could only advance judicial officers’ standards, as individuals, and as an organisation.

“I acknowledge the breadth of expertise in the room this evening. As a fraternity of judiciary professionals, I urge you all to learn from each other, share the lessons, and implement the learnings with the integrity that your profession is known for.”
