LORETTA St Julian-Ooms is one of the most influential figures in Fiji’s modern paddling landscape – a leader whose steady vision, deep respect for va’a culture, and commitment to athlete development have helped shape the sport’s current momentum.

As president of Fiji Outrigger, she has guided the federation through a period of renewed growth, strengthened pathways for junior and elite paddlers, and championed the revival of the Wai Tui International, returning in 2026 after a 14-year hiatus.

A paddler herself, Loretta brings lived experience to her leadership. She understands the demands of the sport – the discipline, the teamwork, the cultural grounding – and has used that insight to build a more connected, athlete-centred paddling community.

Under her tenure, Fiji Outrigger has expanded junior participation, strengthened club development, and supported national-level athletes competing at the IVF World Distance Championships and
Pacific Mini Games.

“We’re excited to bring paddlers together in a way that reflects the strength and spirit of the Pacific.” – Fiji Outrigger media release.

Loretta is widely respected for her calm, collaborative leadership style and her ability to bring clubs, volunteers, offi cials, and partners together around a shared purpose. Her advocacy for safety,
fairness, and professionalism has elevated the standard of domestic regattas, while her strategic focus has helped position Fiji as a regional hub for va’a.

The return of the Wai Tui International — an event deeply tied to Fiji’s paddling heritage — refl ects Loretta’s commitment to honouring the sport’s past while building its future.

Her work continues to open doors for young paddlers, strengthen Fiji’s presence on the international stage, and ensure that the values of va’a remain at the heart of the sport.

As the 2026 season unfolds, Loretta remains a driving force behind Fiji Outrigger’s growth — a leader who blends experience, cultural grounding, and vision to guide the next era of paddling in Fiji.
