EXCITEMENT builds as the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association readies itself to commence its first 2026 domestic competition at the Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva this Saturday.
With over 20 boxers anticipated to participate, the upcoming tournament is already generating buzz within the boxing community.
Head coach Cam Todd has announced that the initial tournament is scheduled for February 14, marking a regular domestic competition at Walu Bay.
Todd also highlights the significance of the year ahead, as it involves identifying potential boxers to form a squad for the Pacific Games in Tahiti, a crucial qualifying event for the 2028 Olympics.
“It will be a very busy year for Fiji Amateur Boxing, also this year is where we will be looking at prospective boxers forming a squad for the Pacific Games next year in Tahiti, that will be a qualifying event for the 2028 Olympics,” said Todd.
He adds anticipation is high for a strong turnout, with enthusiastic interest already shown by several clubs.
This includes clubs that were not part of the competition last year, indicating a growth in participation and competition.
“I think there is going to be a good turn-out, we have good interest from the clubs already, couple of clubs who weren’t competing last year want to appear, which is great.
“Most of the local clubs have already started, so they are training really well, in terms of national squads, boxers who have been selected to represent Fiji at an international event.”
Todd expresses excitement at the prospect of witnessing fresh talents and new boxers who display a deep passion for the sport.
The first tournament serves as a pivotal moment for officials to recalibrate and for boxers to vie for spots on the national team, especially with the Commonwealth Games on the horizon.
“I want to see some of my top returning boxers, as we need to finalize our team for the Commonwealth Games, so I’m looking forward to that, and looking at those fresh new boxers coming through.”
Todd encourages supporters of Fiji Amateur Boxing to show up in numbers to cheer on the team, emphasising the importance of community backing in fostering a successful year for the athletes and the sport.
The team remains optimistic about their prospects in 2026, aiming to achieve heightened success and make their mark in the boxing world.
