A pregnant woman and her husband are counting their blessing after they were rescued by a team of fire and police officers from flooded waters yesterday.

Shristi Naicker was rushed to the Rakiraki Hospital and straight to the delivery room where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Her husband Pranil Chand, acknowledged the officers for saving not only one but two lives.

National Fire Authority Rakiraki Station officer Filimoni Nabati said the officers were playing their role.

“I received a call from the health authorities that a pregnant woman needed to be brought to the hospital,” he said.

“I went to the house in Caulasi first and was instructed by officers to bring a cut-out water tank and we used it to transport the lady through the flooded roads.”

Fire and police officers waded through waist-deep waters for about 20 minutes on the Fiji Sugar Corporation Rd, pulling the makeshift boat as the Ministry of Health staff members waited on the town end.

“One of our jobs is to save lives and that’s why we organised ourselves and carried out this operation.

“We serve people in distress, and this was one such occasion.

“Today (yesterday) we saved two lives.” Police chief operations officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Khan commended the joint operation by stakeholders in Rakiraki.

“It was a team effort consisting of fire officers, health workers, our officers and other stakeholders that assisted in retrieving the 28-year-old mother from Colase to Rakiraki Hospital.”
