Prefects urged to be good

PREFECTS of Kalabu Secondary School during their prefect induction ceremony last week were urged to be good leaders of the school.

Speaking to the 38 newly inducted prefects, chief guest Peni Rerevakanakalou reminded students of having discipline and good attitude toward their learning and life.

Mr Rerevakanakalou, who has spent years with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, shared with students the importance of achieving dreams.

He said celebrating milestone achievements like the prefect induction was vital.

Jone Vunirova Gade, who hails from Nukuni Village in Ono-i-Lau, was inducted as the school head boy during the ceremony while Makereta Taleca of Doi Village in Ono-i-Lau with maternal links to Naiserelagi Village in Saivou, Ra, was inducted as the head girl.

Gade, who spend five years at the school, said he was blessed to have been selected as head boy.

“Having my grandmother present to witness the event is really special to me,” Gade said.

He said his parents and grandmother were happy to hear that he was selected as the school head boy.

Taleca, who will assist Gade, thanked God for her new role as the head girl.

The 20-year-old, who repeated Year 12 twice, didn’t let that dampen her spirit of achieving her goal.

Speaking as the school’s head girl she encouraged young people like her to always strive for the best and never back down on becoming successful.

“I thank God for his unconditional love and for being there for me and allowing me to be the head girl of the student body alongside the head boy,” she said.

“I didn’t expect to be selected as the school head girl especially being a student who had repeated twice in her senior year, but I thank the teachers for trusting me to carry out this important role for the school.

“I hope to lead by example, especially to the younger students and help the teachers in any way I can.

“The other prefects inducted today are like my brothers and sisters and we hope that we will work hard this year to maintain the school rules and help the teachers.”

The induction ceremony was held at the school last week.
